About the Artist

Wanda Wood

Pastel Artist

I have been painting for over 30 years. Several years ago I took a pastel workshop and got semi-hooked on pastels. Then I took a pastel workshop in which we worked on sanded paper. That was it, I was completely hooked and the oil paints and brushes were put away.

Developing a landscape or portrait on "sandpaper" gives a depth of feeling that is unique for pastels. The "sandpaper" is not your common everyday hardware store variety, but a very fine grade of artist's sanded paper.

When I first started working on sanded paper, there was only one paper that I knew of and it was imported from Germany. Today there are many different types of sanded paper on the market. The secret is in the "tooth" of the paper, which allows for a building of color and a blending capability other papers do not offer. It is a very exciting media to work in because each new painting brings a challenge as well as a learning experience.

Painting is not just something I do - it is something as fundamentally necessary to my well-being as breathing.

My paintings are in homes across the United States as well as Canada, China and parts of Europe. I have also done several commissions for various corporations.
